Project Description
Extension and upgrade of the Alexandria East Wastewater Treatment Plant to increase its treatment capacity to 800,000 m³/day, incorporating advanced sludge treatment and biogas energy recovery systems while improving sanitation services for East Alexandria.
The Alexandria East Wastewater Treatment Plant extension and upgrade is a major infrastructure project managed by Egypt’s Construction Authority for Potable Water and Wastewater (CAPW), aimed at expanding the facility’s capacity from primary treatment to a full secondary treatment facility with an average capacity of 800,000 m³/day.
With a total estimated budget of approximately €185 million, around EGP 10.23 billion, financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and EU grants, the project is designed to improve sanitation for over 1.5 million residents in East Alexandria.
A key feature is the integration of advanced sludge treatment and biogas energy recovery systems, which will cover 60–80% of the plant’s power needs, contributing to environmental protection of Lake Maryout and El Mex Bay and supporting sustainable operations.
